Origin
The Pekingese or The Pekinese is the ancient breed over 2000 yrs old but it is strange to know that they did not change in this long span of time. This breed of toy dog has its origin in China and was the favorite pet of Chinese imperial court. The name of the dog also resembles the name of the city Beijing. This dog has historical importance and can be seen in the Chinese artworks. In China this dog was known to be guardian spirit, as it resembled Chinese lions.
Appearance
The face of Pekingese dogs is flat and its body is compact and low to the ground. The bowed legs of these dogs restrict its movements and its unusual rolling gait prevents it from wandering. You will find two types of coat on the body of Pekingese dog; one is of longhaired type and the other Spaniel- type coat. If you have one Pekingese you will come across some strange behavior of this dog.
Grooming
You should not expect that the dog should listen to you and come towards you after calling, as they are stubborn and at times jealous. The personality traits of this dog are compared with cat. It is very difficult to train this dog. But if needed the Pekingese can be friends with any other dog but not with siblings, mates and puppies. If they love some one they put their heart out to express their love and if needed will do anything to protect you. Even they can sacrifice their life for you. These dogs should not be kept in the company of violent and naughty children, as they dislike being mauled by anyone.
